It is hard to find anyone who doesn’t enjoy watching movies. While we all have our own likes and dislikes in terms of what kind of movies we like to watch, we’re all film buffs in our own way and there are more than enough different films out there to keep anyone who’s interested in watching movies occupied for a lifetime. We get lost in movies and that, perhaps is the biggest part of their appeal. We can forget about our lives for a little while, laugh, cry or leave with something to think about. Even in an age where people spend a lot of their leisure time on the internet or playing video games, movies have survived and remain one of the most popular forms of media worldwide.
It used to be that if you wanted to watch a movie, you had to go to the theater. It was a sort of social experience and people would go watch a film with family and friends; however, when television became a fixture in most homes, there was a small decline in the audience for films in theaters. Watching movies at home really got going in the early 1980s with the introduction of video cassette players and for the first time for most consumers, it was possible to watch almost any recent film and many older titles in the privacy and comfort of one’s own home. DVDs came along about a decade later, but in the last several years, a newer technology has made it more convenient than ever to watch any movie you want, any time you want without leaving your living room.
Ever since broadband internet access started to become the norm rather than a rare (and rather expensive) exception, it has become possible for the average person to watch movies online. With a dial up modem, this was all but impossible due to the bandwidth required to stream video; it was so frustrating to watch a movie over the web before DSL, cable and fiber optic internet connections that most people would consider going to their local video rental store a better option. Now of course, you can watch movies online at any time you like without having to wait a long time for the streaming video to buffer or to download a large movie file.
There are now a number of choices available to people who want to watch movies on their computer or on a television set which is compatible with the video output from their home computer. There are sites which operate on a paid subscription based model; sites like Netflix, for instance. These services charge a flat monthly rate which allows the customer to watch as many movies or television shows as they like; since most of these sites also offer a large library of old and new titles to choose from, they’re a popular choice for people who want to watch movies online. There are also free sites which you can choose from, though they often suffer in comparison to the commercial online movie sites in terms of selection and streaming quality. Online video has really arrived and now, all that remains for movie lovers to do is to choose from an ever growing number of options.
